During the past month, Joseph's Project received the following cash donations:
St. Mary's Parish in Jefferson MA - $1,192.00
Davis Hill PTA in Holden MA - $1,031.50
Our current balance is nearly $4,200.
We are continuing to support 6-8 families. (The number varies from week to week as the families' needs change.)
The Board discussed the inclusion of fresh produce and other foods to supplement the packaged and canned goods. We currently do not have storage facilities for fresh food and so will need to coordinate fresh food purchases with deliveries. In addition, several of the Board members offered refrigerator and freezer space for short-term storage.
The Board discussed a number of short-, medium-, and long-range goals including the following:
Setting a number of financial goals, including total cash-on-hand and monthly income and expense reports.
Contacting local schools (via school nurse) to help identify children and families who may be in need. The nurse (or other school official) could provide a letter or flyer providing information about Joseph's Project and letting the family decide if they would like to receive assistance from the Project. See action items.
Developing a shopping list for each family to identify special requirements such as food allergies, number of children, etc.
Developing a delivery schedule and food requirements posted at the Project office. This will help those who do the shopping for the families.
As the project expands, we will need additional storage and office space and a dedicated phone number. We will probably also need a refrigerator.
A St. Mary's confirmand is looking for a confirmation project. Student could inspect our current food reserves and determine if any of the food has reached its expiration date. Food that has passed its expiration date should be discarded. Food nearing the expiration date, if not needed for current deliveries, could be given to other organizations, such as the Mustard Seed, for immediate use.
Mike will attend the next Knights of Columbus meeting to discuss donations of grocery store food cards and other assistance that the Knights can provide.
